How software developers changed the world
We live in a technological era and software is taking over our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. From agriculture to automotive or pharma, all industries have been impacted by the technological boom.
Although we are surrounded by computers, few people know the fascinating story of how software development evolved over the years.
The history of computing is often associated with the World War II when engineers used computers to solve tactical problems. In 1941, an engineer named Konrad Zuse designed a digital computer that was using software to solve general problems.
In 1960, software was produced and sold to end users, even though, until then, it was given away for free when you bought a new computer.
In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, Apple and Microsoft started to produce their own operating systems and that was the beginning of the fast and accessible software era.
From that moment on, software became an important part of our lives. In 2008 there were more than a billion computers in the world. In 2013, there were 1.4 billion smartphones in use, all over the Globe.
Today, we use software in every industry, from medicine to banking.
Let’s take a look at some of the industries that were most impacted by software developers:
In the Health industry, software development made a pretty big impact through innovative solutions like telemedicine.
One of the most innovative products that uses software in telemedicine is the Consult Station produced by Health-4-Development. This telemedicine cabin is a medical device that allows people to get a physical exam on the spot. H4D wanted to use existing instruments, such as a tensiometer or a stethoscope, and integrate them into a capsule that would recreate the conditions of a medical office: sterile environment, favorable temperature, etc. That is when Kepler stepped in and developed a software that integrates the medical instruments with the health cabin.
The diversity of the measuring instruments in the booth and the dialogue that takes place via video conferencing allows the doctor to establish a reliable and secure diagnosis.

Software development revolutionized the automotive industry in many ways, from software solutions for the systematization of work in car services to autonomous cars.
With the help of software developers, car engineers are able to test a control unit without the need for the entire environment. This technology is called HIL – Hardware in the loop. HIL can be used to avoid early testing of the SW engine control unit on a real-motor vehicle by replacing the actual part with the virtual one. Specifically, instead of a motor vehicle, a simulator is connected to the control unit. HIL technology creates a safer and cheaper way to test new vehicles.
Car shops also benefit from the technological evolution. For example, Kepler developed a cloud-based system that can be accessed from anywhere, dedicated to car shops. The solution is a tool that uses color-coding to give visual feedback to the technicians. The information can be filtered by technicians, by insurance, by company or by vehicles that need to be delivered today. One of the features of this system, that makes it easy to use is the drag and drop capability. Every vehicle movement is date and time stamped - this information can be used to create dashboards and reports. This solution improves communication about the status of the vehicles and keeps everyone in sync.

Airplanes rely on software to monitor the weather, to control the wildlife on the tracks and to fly.
Have you ever wondered what happens when a bird gets stuck in an airplane propeller? It’s not a situation you want to witness. Kepler designed a software that has built-in bioacoustics capabilities to scare wildlife, logs all airport events that involve wildlife, performs runway inspections and has advanced reporting capabilities.

We all love to fly, but few of us know what lies behind an ordinary plane landing. There is a not so ordinary technology that ensures the safety of each flight, called AWOS (Automated Weather Observing System).
Kepler developed a custom AWOS application for the Romanian Air Traffic Control Agency. This project was originally developed as a real-time weather monitoring system for Romanian airports, providing support for flight decisions. It combines more than 130 observed or calculated atmospheric parameters into a comprehensive interface, helping airport authorities to make accurate and safe decisions.
Our custom AWOS application is a complex, yet modern system adapted to international requirements on airport software solutions; its application design, implementation and testing are performed in conformity with 3 (SWAL) security level recommended by ESARR 6 – it performs according to a redundant system architecture.
Its modular architecture made possible replacing the entire sensor arrays with new ones. Our solution was easily adapted to other real-time weather fields. Based on our customer’s needs, the solution was customized to acquire new types of weather data from specific acquisition modules and to attach a new meaning to it, for further processing or display.
Travel and Leisure
Software changed the way we book our vacations. There are thousands of websites in every country that can help you choose the fastest route or the cheapest hotel. This kind of applications are using algorithms and databases to find the best solution for your vacation.
Software made it easy for people to research destinations, find reviews and compare them.
Software developers also helped hotels to automatize time-consuming processes like ordering the supplies: soaps, shampoos, toilet paper, etc.
Kepler helped one of its clients to redesign the website and build a new application that implements a procurement center for groups, hotel chains and restaurants in France.
We provided a complete Business Analysis and came up with a modern and user-friendly website. We created and developed a business framework as a relatively generic template. Kepler also designed a useful ERP for billing, loyalty on points, accounting and offer customizations.
